Scotland, with its castles, lochs, and dramatic landscapes, is a magical destination to explore with your cat.
But since Brexit, Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) follows its own rules, separate from the EU.
Here's exactly what you need to know.
✅ Step 1 : Microchip and Rabies Vaccination
Your cat must have an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip.
The order matters : microchip first, then the rabies vaccination, at least 21 days before arrival, and your cat must be at least 1 year old at the time of the shot
Since the USA is a listed country, no rabies blood test is required, that's one less hurdle compared to pet owners from non-listed countries.
📄 Step 2 : The GB Pet Health Certificate
This is different from the EU certificate you may have seen for France or Italy.
You'll need a GB-specific health certificate form, signed by a USDA-accredited vet, then endorsed by USDA APHIS, your cat must arrive within 10 days of that endorsement.
If you're traveling within 5 days of your cat, you'll fall under the non-commercial path, the simpler and more common route for personal travel.
One small relief for cat owners specifically: the tapeworm treatment requirement only applies to dogs, not cats.
✈️ Step 3 : Approved Routes Only
You'll need to check that your route is approved for pet travel before booking anything.
You should also confirm that your transport company is authorized to carry pets into Great Britain.
💡 Good news for cat owners : unlike larger dogs, cats can often still travel in the cabin with certain airlines, subject to the airline's own pet policy, always confirm directly when booking.
Planning to Continue On to the EU Afterward ?
If your trip includes both Scotland and an EU country (France, Italy, etc.), pay close attention here : as of April 22, 2026, EU pet passports are only valid for EU residents, if you live outside the EU, including the US, your EU pet passport will not be accepted.
You'll need a separate EU Animal Health Certificate for that leg of the trip, in addition to your GB documents.
🏴 One Regional Note
Guidance on the Northern Ireland Pet Travel Scheme differs from the rest of the UK.
This guide covers Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales), if you're heading to Belfast or Northern Ireland, the process follows EU-aligned rules instead
Navigating two different pet travel systems in one trip can get confusing fast.
That's exactly the kind of complexity Papattes en Vadrouille helps you sort out, so you can focus on enjoying Scotland with your cat, not deciphering government websites.
